Yep, a vicious cycle, but one that probably nets them a few hundred bucks a month in Adsense after a few months, if they do it well. But then, I guess they’re making money then LOL The bad thing is that there are plenty of people who really do want to learn to blog on a subject they love, but we trick them by making them thing it’s all about money when it isn’t. Blogging isn’t about making money at all. It’s about sharing what you know and if that makes you money, great… but if it doesn’t, that doesn’t mean you haven’t contributed to the discussion.
The way I’ve monetized my blog has almost always been consulting. My Adsense earns me little, but the consulting fees I made (pre-MyBlogLog of course) were more than enough to justify my blogging. However, had I not made a dime (and I didn’t for the first 6 months), I would have kept doing it because blogging meant something to me. And it still does. Blogging gives me a way to voice grievances; a way to be a part of something bigger than me; a way to contribute to the conversation. And, by the way, I’d do that for free any day of the week.

Robyn – Thanks for the link and your take on the situation. Its great to be able to put your thoughts out there and join the conversation, isn’t it?
See ya!
First off robyn it was great to meet you at the SOB conference – you are a ball of energy and were excellent at adding to the conversation.
I love your take on blogging above and I totally agree. It is amazing how much blogging has done for my business without even asking for it.
I read a post once where somebody said “Don’t hored your ideas” and it stuck with me . The more you share and put out there the more that comes back to you. And not only in a monitary sense – but when you love what you do and it is your passion – the money somehow just appears. That is not to say it doesn’t come with hard work – but when it is your passion – it is somehow like play more then work.
Totally my pleasure Lucia. I heart the Blog Studio so it was nice to put a couple of faces to the name
I agree with the passion part. People search too much for the money, when you really look at the uber-successful, they are successful because they love it, not because they were chasing money. People won’t pay for the same junk they read everywhere, and you have to have a unique voice to give value. And, if you enjoy yourself, whether you make money or not, you are successful. That’s always been my war cry, anyway.
