Business Books I’ve Been Reading

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been head down in some great books. The books I’m discussing today were the ones that really motivated me to post. One I bought, two were sent to me for review. For the rest of the books that I have received lately, I either have not gotten around to reading them yet (and I promise that I will) or I have decided not to post about them. Not saying anything if I can’t say something nice and all that…

The first one, Beyond Booked Solid, is a follow up to a book that was a huge success, Book Yourself Solid. After reading the follow-up, I can see why people bought the first book in such huge numbers. Michael Port has an engaging style and the book was an easy read, even though it was one of those books where you had to stop every now and then to complete an exercise. It was empowering, in that it really focuses on building a business that you will enjoy, not one that will necessarily make you as rich as Trump. However, there are plenty of nuggets in the book that will help you get to that mega-crazy rich status, if that’s what you desire. If you liked 4 Hour Work Week, you’ll love this book. Seriously, go buy it, it’s like $15.

The next book, The Chic Entrepreneur: Put Your Business in Higher Heels, by Elizabeth Gordon and Leanna Adams, was also sent to me and I knew, from the moment I saw the cover, I was going to like it. The book’s style is fun and conversational, and I am not kidding that I read this book in like 2 days, it was so enjoyable. The book really focuses on women who’ve made it in their own way and how you can take their proven methods and get your own business just where you want it to be. Again, an inexpensive paperback, at $10, and one that should be on your must read list.

The last book, Groundswell: Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies, was written by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff from Forrester Research. I had planned on reading it, as I saw many of my friends online were reading it, but it wasn’t until I happened to attend a webinar on the book that I knew I had to buy it. See, in some cases, webinars do still work…

The book is good, but speaks on many things that I already know. However, the metrics in the book alone are worth the $20 price tag (it’s a hardback). Likewise, the case studies in this book are great and are helpful in understanding directly how community, social media and reviews/ratings can impact your brand. Highly recommended.
