TechMeme’s Success

I never cease to be amazed at what Gabe at Techmeme has been able to accomplish in such a short time.

Today a discussion about Techmeme took place at the ISN strategy meeting. We all recognize that the thought leaders online are there in spades. And then again tonight at the small blogger meetup the subject came up again. Martin remarked how clean and barely there the advertising was on the site. Jeremiah said he refreshed the site at least hourly to see what is going on in the blogosphere. I keep Techmeme in a permanent tab on my Firefox, along with Google Reader, especially on days I am focused on blogging.

I love the way the advertising is limited only to your company’s blog posts. I mean, no one is just shilling on Techmeme. This month’s advertisers are likely being very careful to only bring relevant news and interesting commentary to their blogs. I’m supposed to talk to a newspaper that is launching a blog ad network sometime next week. I think I’ll point them to Techmeme’s admirable model as one to watch.

  1. Thanks Robyn. Happy to occupy that permanent tab!

Techmeme’s “ad model” is one thing I would like other blogs to copy. As long as they mention where they got the inspiration!

  2. The biggest problem for me with Techmeme is that.. it is all tech, and whilst it has been said before, they don’t have a very wide net.

I have played around with Tailrank but didn’t find their front page hugely useful, and their custom version only managed to pickup 70 or so sites from the 300+ I submitted from the Toprank Blog OPML

Thus I am sticking with Megite – I find it relevant and very up to date on what matters to me, it picks up the little guys with something interesting to say fairly well, and thus seems to have a wider reach within a niche.

  3. Andy,
I like Megite too, but it really only reflects what is going on with the feeds I read. I think, between techmeme (authority blogs) and my own feeds (made up of lots of smaller blogs too), I get a good snapshot of the blogsphere.

I use digg alot too, to see breaking news (and for fun).

You know that techmeme has sister sites too, right? Like memeorandum.com and the ones listed in techmeme’s sidebar. Some of those might be useful to see a bigger picture.

    Were you at Affiliate Summit?

  4. Sorry it took a few days to get back here – so many conversations

I stay stuck in my corner of central Europe most of the time 😉

I am aware of the other sister sites, but just find Megite gives me a broader picture.

I haven’t seen any story hot enough since their newest upgrade to grab a screenshot, but they are claiming that they will be linking to 100 stories.
